2018 Message from Mayor Wood

Mayor Philip Wood

Well 2017 is now in the history books and 2018 is here! There is good reason to think (and hope) that it will be equally as good a year for the Town of Bay Roberts as 2017!

December past, Council presented its Budget for 2018. It was a balanced budget ($9.4M) designed to provide the necessary core services that residents are asking for and deserve. It was also a Budget that will see major investments in infrastructure and recreation. Some highlights include:

  • No changes to tax rates for both property and business owners along with no increase in Water & Sewer Taxes.
  • The continuation of the 10% discount for early payment for seniors and also the continuation of our low income senior payment plan.
  • Upgrades and completion of some work from 2017 at the Wilbur Sparkes Recreation Complex as outlined in our Recreation Master Plan that was adopted in 2014. These include the addition of a splash-pad and completion of some work in order to help make the facility inclusive for all. The budget also provides for upgrades to the Butlerville Ball field along with providing monies for necessary repairs to the washrooms at the Bay Arena.
  • The budget, through a variety of funding options, will see funding provided for necessary waste water system improvements and complete planned road infrastructure projects for Country Road, Goose Pond Hill, along with replacing the Klondyke Bridge. Monies have also been set aside in hopes of partnering with both the Federal and Provincial Governments focusing on pedestrian safety and promoting additional economic activity along Route 70.

Once again, I would also like to remind residents about our Recycling Program. I urge everyone to Reduce, Reuse & Participate so as this project continues to grow bigger and better – remember Recycling helps our environment in a very big way and is also more economical for taxpayers!

There will undoubtedly be a lot of activities ongoing this Winter Season both in Bay Roberts and in the surrounding area. I encourage everyone to get out and about and enjoy what the season has to offer. Get involved – take in as many of these events as possible in order to show your support. To see what’s on the go – check regularly at bayroberts.com At the same time, congratulations and thank you to all of our volunteers – please continue with your efforts in 2018 – they are much appreciated.

Lastly, to say the least about the weather in Newfoundland & Labrador, it is very unpredictable. In Winter I’m sure it is even more so. As a result, I ask everyone to stay prepared for the snow, ice and colder temperatures that will surely come this season. Most importantly – drive safely! Our Works Department is always out there during this time of year doing their very best to maintain safe driving conditions for all! Thanking everyone in advance for their support and cooperation. All the best – I hope it is an enjoyable season for all!
