EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES & PROGRAMS

The town has three large modern schools which boast some of the best facilities and reputations in the province. In addition, there are pre-school and day care facilities and specialized services for physically handicapped persons.

Canadian Training Institute

The Canadian Training Institute, located on the Access Road, offers commercial driving instruction and heavy equipment operator instruction. The training school is an excellent fit for a town that has a number of wholesale businesses that transport goods using the Trans Canada Highway.

BRIDGES Program


To enable all members of the community, especially older members, to become computer literate, the Eastern School District (Avalon West Region) offers Free Computer Sessions at Ascension Collegiate, Bay Roberts.

These sessions are open to the adult members of the community, and are held  Monday - Thursday evenings and on Saturdays.

 

ASCENSION COLLEGIATE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Ascension Collegiate is the largest senior high school on the Baccalieu Trail. Ascension Alumni have made their mark in all parts of the world.

About 750 students from Upper Island Cove to Georgetown attend Grades Ten to Twelve. The school offers a wide range of courses and programs, including a French Immersion program and an Advanced Placement program that allows students to receive university credits while still in high school. The mathematics, science, and technology programs are capable of competing with any senior high school in North America. In addition, the school has specialized programs for students who have special needs and challenging needs.

Ascension has a strong co-curricular program in public speaking, art, music, drama, travel, community service, and sports. From these activities, Ascension students have brought home numerous commendations and trophies, including the National Green Team Challenge Canadian Environment Award in 2005.

AMALGAMATED ACADEMY

The Amalgamated Academy covers grades 5 to 9 with a total of 660 students. The school offers a French Immersion program which starts in grade 7, as well as Advanced Placement courses. In addition, it offers services for special needs and challenging needs.

The Amalgamated Academy is an excellent center for community learning. Students come from neighboring seaside communities from Marysvale to Bay Roberts . This helps develop an atmosphere of trust, collaboration, and creative energy.

There are thirty six full-time and two part-time educational staff, one guidance councilor, six student assistants, one full time secretary and three maintenance personnel. In addition to staff based at the school, the school has access to District Office staff including: educational psychologist, speech pathologist and itinerant teachers for the visually and hearing impaired.

Students are the heart and soul of the Amalgamated Academy so the school purpose is to create a positive environment for learning. Fostering effective links between the school and students’ home lives is key to achieving the school purpose, since links enable teachers, students and parents to work together as a team to ensure student success.

Coley's Point Primary

Coley's Point Primary has an enrolment of 388 students and offers Kindergarten to Grade 4. The school serves the communities of Bareneed, Bay Roberts, and Port-de-Grave. 93% of the students are bussed to school. Coley’s Point Primary is currently a three-stream school in grades 1 to 4. There are four Kindergarten classes. The average class size is 25.

Reading intervention programs support students who are showing delays in early literacy development. Early Success and Soar to Success are small group reading intervention programs designed to remediate reading difficulties experienced by primary children. As well, scheduling opportunities are provided for individual conferencing and small group interventions.

The school is a provincial leader in Mathematics education. Teachers and students regard mathematics as problem solving, reasoning, and communication with manipulative materials and interactive learning playing a central role in the development of mathematical concepts in all classrooms. Connections between mathematics and everyday life are an integral part of mathematics teaching and learning.

The school has a modern, fully equipped computer lab. All classrooms are networked with most classrooms having two or more computers. Students have access to a laser printer, color inkjet printer, scanner, three digital cameras and quick cams. An ongoing initiative at the school is the support and enhancing of curriculum through the integration of technology with each grade level responsible for at least one integrated technology unit.

Coley’s Point Primary’s Music program is designed to foster an appreciation for the arts. It provides avenues of development through songs, games, listening skills and musical training in an active learning environment and strives to augment and extend on classroom instruction. School choirs are involved in community events like variety concerts and other functions, as well as assembly cameos throughout the year at the school.

The Physical Education program at Coley’s Point Primary provides students with learning opportunities that will develop a wholesome attitude towards participation in sport and physical activity, and develop an understanding of the positive effects of active, healthy living. The school keeps abreast of current issues with national programs such as Spectagular, a cross Canada school event where students played multiclass outdoor games of tag for thirty consecutive minutes; WonderFresh Fitness Challenge, a cross Canada school fitness program; Mission UV, a program to prevent sunburn sponsored by Ombrelle L’Oreal Canada Ltd.; Hit the Books, an anti-bullying and reading incentive campaign sponsored by the Canadian Teachers’ Federation; Walk Across Canada; and Jump Rope for Heart, sponsored by the Heart and Stroke Foundation. As well, Kindergarten parents/caregivers were supplied with Canada’s Physical Activity Guide for Children, and KinderStart parents were provide with Family Guide to Physical Activity for Children.

A number of Post Secondary Institutions are very close to the town. Employers can utilize these institutions for employee training. As well, the College of the North Atlantic, Memorial University, and the Marine Institute can assist in establishing research and development projects.

College of the North Atlantic (CNA)

The College of the North Atlantic (CNA), as part of its public mandate, develops courses to meet the needs of employers. For business, for industry, for governments, CNA develops customized training options from a list of over 95 full-time diploma and certificate programs and a comprehensive range of 300 part-time courses.They also build entirely new programs tailored to fit the training requirements of clients.

CNA prides itself in responsiveness to client needs; training can vary in duration – from a one-day session to programs of several weeks – offered anytime, anywhere. A team of business development officers will meet with the employer to determine training requirements, and then work with content experts and other resource personnel to tailor a training program to meet those needs.

Although the Baccalieu region is known for its ties to the fishing industry, it has a large agricultural base as well, growning approximately 25% of the agricultural products in the province. The CNA Carbonear campus (20 mins from Bay Roberts) is the Agriculture training and research centre in the province. The campus is dedicated to supporting Newfoundland and Labrador's agriculture industry in its endeavor to develop and diversify, realize opportunities, and maximize the potential for long-term growth and sustainability. Recently, the campus has begun a new experiment using wind generated power to provide heat and light to grow crops in a hot house on campus.

Headquarters on Ridge Road in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the Marine Institute (MI) is Canada’s leading centre of fisheries and marine training.  As part of Memorial University of Newfoundland, they offer bachelors and masters’ degrees, one-year advanced diplomas, two-year and three-year diplomas, certificates and vocational; programs.  MI is divided into two schools: the School of Fisheries and the School of Maritime Studies.

The institute has a number of centres and units, including the Offshore Safety and Survival Centre (OSSC), the Centre of Marine Simulations (CMS), the Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (C-ASD), MI International and the Centre for Sustainable and Aquatic Resources (C-SAR).  These areas lead the institute in applied research and technology transfer and also provide training to a variety of industry clients.

The Marine Institute is one of only five public educational institutions in Canada to have ISO 9001 certification. The International Organization for Standardization rating is a voluntary, globally recognized standard for organizations committed to providing quality products and services that are efficient, consistent and continuously improving.
