The City of St. John's has all the medical facilities and medical specialists that are found in cities of a similar size across North America. Major facilities are under the Health Care Corporation of St. John's which serves the 200,000 people of the Avalon Region. Services include: the General Hospital and the Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre, the Health Sciences Centre, the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre, St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, and the Waterford Hospital.

The Janeway Children's Hospital is the only children's hospital in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The center of excellence in child health was officially opened on June 21, 2001. It has spacious and bright inpatient units, modern surgical and emergency departments, and a “kid-friendly” design. It brings together the children of the province with the one-of-a-kind services available in the Health Sciences Complex.

The General is a tertiary or high-level acute care facility serving the people of the entire province. It is a teaching hospital and is connected to Memorial University’s Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing. It is also connected and shares services and staff with the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre. The Women’s Heath Clinic is also located in the General Hospital.

The General Hospital is located in the centre of the city on the university campus, Prince Philip Parkway.

Services provided at St. Clare’s include surgery, emergency care, medicine, cardiology, diagnostic and laboratory services and outpatient care. In addition, St. Clare’s has a Rheumatic Disease Unit and offers sleep studies.

The Mental Health Program uses the Waterford Hospital as its base of operations and provides mostly acute care at the facility. Less than 200 clients occupy beds at any time in the Hospital, and there are numerous outpatient and community-based services.

The Waterford now also provides Dialysis services, Blood Collection and X-Ray Clinics.

This Centre the only provider of radiation therapy in the province. Services at this site include: a cancer registry (information on cancer incidence and mortality); medical oncology; nutrition services; prevention and screening initiatives; radiation oncology; recreation and leisure activities program; research and clinical trails initiatives; social work services; and pain and symptom management/palliative care.
