Bay Roberts has three large schools, two of which draw students from the population in surrounding communities - Ascension Collegiate (750 students - Grades 10-12), Amalgamated Academy (660 students - Grades 5-9.) The schools bring children and parents from surrounding towns to Bay Roberts for educational and co-curricular activities. The regional public library is also located in Bay Roberts. The Bay Roberts Swimming Pool, several private music teachers, Catherine's Dance Studio, Earle’s Tae Kwon Do, and Old Mill Lanes Bowling also bring parents and children to the town.
The Bay Arena, which is the centre for hockey and figure skating in winter and other activities in the summer, is located in Bay Roberts. A large soccer field, softball fields, and tennis courts, which serve the region are also located in the town.
The Bay Roberts Volunteer Fire Department provides services for neighbouring communities such as Bareneed and Port de Grave.
The Canadian Armed Forces has two properties in Makinsons (near Clarke's Beach), Combrai Rifle Range and Emerald Vale Maneuver Range. Approximately 1500 reservists and cadets per year, who come from across the province to practice on these ranges, come to Bay Roberts to eat out and /or buy supplies.

In addition to offering regional educational and recreational services, Bay Roberts has a number of retail stores including: large supermarkets, building trades, clothing, gifts, furniture, drug stores, a liquor store, and general merchandise stores. The town has a large number of restaurants and fast food services. As well, there are professional medical services such as doctors, dentists, chiropractors, dispensing opticians, physiotherapists, pharmacists, and veterinarians. Other professionals include lawyers, engineers, real estate agents, and financial advisors. Bank of Montreal, Scotiabank, and a large post office are also found in the town.

People from areas between 30 and 60 minutes away usually come for a specific reason. For example, Morgan's Furniture in Bay Roberts is very well known. They have so many customers from outside the region that they offer free delivery to St. John's. Three automotive dealerships - Avalon Ford, Woodward Motors Ltd, Penney Mazda, independently owned used car lots, garages, and automotive parts and services stores also attract people to town. Consumers also come to purchase merchandise, especially gifts, at stores such as Wescal Department Store, Hidden Treasures, Zachery's Factory Outlet, and Jewelry Plus because these gift stores have established reputations. In addition, people come to the town when their children participate in school sponsored events at Ascension Collegiate, the largest senior high school on the Baccalieu Trail, and/or the Amalgamated Academy. Children and adults participate in events at the Bay Arena, the Wilbur Sparkes Recreation Complex, the Community Gardens, and the other recreational venues. They also come to visit the Shoreline Heritage Walking Trail, the "Road to Yesterday" Museum, and the Christopher Pratt Art Gallery.
