Tips for Cleaning the Searstown Estuary
Based on the Booklet
"The Shearstown Estuary: Where the River Meets the Sea"

Saving the Estuary!

The Joint Management Team sponsors Estuary Cleaning at various times during the year. Watch for notices and participate.

Decades of abuse from human activity have resulted in the loss of critical wildlife habitat and have affected the overall condition of the estuary.

The runoff from agricultural activity occurring in fields adjacent to the estuary combined with leeching of nutrients from storm drains, septic fields and aging municipal sewage systems in the area are all contributing to an overabundance of nutrients within the water system. This heavy nutrient load may contribute to algal blooms in the area.

Enormous amounts of garbage indiscriminately thrown into and around the estuary have compromised the integrity of wildlife habitat and decreased the aesthetic value of the area for humans.

Many shoreline trees and shrubs have been replaced by fields and manicured lawns. Infilling of the estuary for commercial, residential and road development has destroyed or irrevocably altered much of the shoreline habitat around the estuary and contributed to siltation of the water column.

Many people are unaware of their impact on the environment and, hence, do not see their responsibility towards conserving this ecosystem.

This unique estuarine habitat has historically been the site of much ecological disturbance. Yet, with commitment from residents, community leaders, municipal governments and conservation organizations, the Shearstown Estuary is capable of retaining its integrity as a critical type of ecosystem.

Tips for Cleaning the Estuary
  • Wear gloves at all times! Rubber or latex gloves are advised when working directly in the water of the estuary. Dress according to the forecasted weather and the area that you are working within.
  • Place all beverage recyclables and broken glass (be careful with all sharp objects) in a lined cardboard box. Please do NOT place these items in a garbage bag!
  • Do not pick up drift wood (these add to the scenic beauty of the area and provide habitat for wildlife).
  • If an item is being used as a habitat (eg. coral encrusting a steel can) do not disturb it. We want to enhance life, not destroy it.
  • If the cleaning activity accidentally flushes a bird from a nest, you may be interfering with breeding and nesting. Leave the area quickly and quietly but note the area where the bird was flushed on the
map provided (and the species if possible) and tell a Joint Management Committee member! [W
aterfowl nests that you may encounter around the Shearstown Estuary during clean ups and if a duck is flushed. Please do not intentionally seek out these nests; waterfowl use a great deal of energy when they are unnecessarily flushed and the eggs stand a greater chance of being preyed upon when the adult is off of the nest.]
  • To minimize wastage, please fill one bag between two people before starting to fill another (unless you are certain that you will fill it).
