we borrow it from our children

LIFESTYLE CHALLENGE

5 GREENER Choices in YOUR HOME.

  • Use your clothesline. It reduces energy costs by replacing electricity with “solar power” and wind. It also eliminates the need for fabric softener!
  • Buy energy-efficient appliances. Look for products marked with the “Energy Star” – which means they’re the best in their class.
  • Be smart when you heat and cool your home. Use an energy-efficient fan not air conditioning! In Newfoundland and Labrador, heating is the second highest housing cost after mortgages. By being energy conscious in your home, you can significantly reduce energy costs. To save, choose not to heat rooms you don’t use, turn down the heat during the night and when you’re away, and put on a sweater instead of turning up the heat.
  • Recycle! By recycling and composting, you can cut your household waste in half, and often you get paid to do it!

CLIMATE CHANGE
The Impact of Global Warming

CLIMATE CHANGE

The huge problem which has been caused by overuse is what BBC News calls the fossil fuel juggernaut. They go on to quote Bert Metz from the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, who co-chaired the IPCC working group on options for mitigating climate change:

"There is real urgency. We need to peak emissions within 10 years if we are to keep the global temperature rise to 2C. If we leave it for 25 years, we're already committed to 3C."

2C means about one third of species at risk of extinction, decreased cereal production in the tropics, most coral reefs bleached.

3C puts millions more people at risk of coastal flooding, decreased cereal production at all latitudes and widespread death of coral reefs.
