Bay Roberts Heritage Society
The Bay Roberts Heritage Society was formed in 1989 to preserve the heritage of the town. The Bay
Roberts Heritage Society was awarded the prestigious Manning Award
of Excellence for 2002 by the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland
and Labrador. The Award was a recognition of the Heritage Society's
efforts in developing the Shoreline Heritage Walk and the restoration
of the Western Union Cable Building which houses the recently
established Christopher Pratt Gallery and Road to Yesterday Museum. In 2002 Mr. Eric Jerrett, who has been instrumental in the development of the Bay Roberts Heritage Society, received an Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Memorial University Alumni Association
New Archives
Because people were bringing along old photos, books, and papers, the Society saw the need to set up an Archives. In 2005 a grant was obtained from the Canadian Council of Archives to establish an Archives. Shirley Owen and Betty Jerrett have attended trainings and are now, with student help, actively conserving, documenting, and properly storing the archival material that has been acquired.
