Atlantic Grocery Distributors Ltd. is the largest independent grocery and food service distributor in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the spring of 2001, they purchased Fowlow’s Wholesale Ltd. in the Town of Port Aux Basques and extended services all across Newfoundland and Labrador. Today, they also service the French territories of St. Pierre and Miquelon, the North Shore of the Province of Quebec and many specialty stores across the country. Focusing on core values—customer service, reliability, quality and continuous improvement— AGD has grown in the wholesale business from less than $5,000,000 in sales in 1990 to many time that amount in sales today.

History

The company was founded in 1948 by Herbert Powell as a retail business in Carbonear. In 1955, Herbert Powell relocated to Bay Roberts and opened Conception Bay's first supermarket.

Since then, Powell's has opened two more supermarkets: one in the Town of Harbour Grace and another in the Town of Carbonear for a total of three.

Warehouse Facilites

The total warehouse facility has expanded from 28,000 to 100,000 sq. ft. It has six different temperature zones and it is NSF Cook & Thurber Certified and HACCP Accredited. AGD has developed a certified HACCP system at the facility. This system identifies potential hazards and implements control measures during processing and distribution.

2005 Food Show

Each year AGD sponsors a large Food Show for hundreds of existing and prospective customers from all sectors of the retail and foodservice industries. AGD suppliers and their outstanding products are showcased. The show provides a great opportunity to network with industry partners, sample exciting new products, and take advantage of the fantastic specials.

Community Involvement

AGD and Powell’s Supermarkets, of the Powell Group of Companies, believe in contributing to the local community and society at large. With the generosity of customers, business partners and employees they work together to create a better place to live. AGD is a proud sponsor of the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Every year, Powell’s Supermarket in Bay Roberts participates in the Big Bike Ride in aid of the Heart & Stroke Foundation In 2006, they raised an amazing $7,936.00—a record for Newfoundland and Labrador. Powell’s Supermarket is also a corporate sponsor of Klondyke Days in the town of Bay Roberts. In addition, during 3 of the 14 days of festivities, Powell’s provides hot meals to the public with proceeds going to the Janeway Foundation and Trinity Conception Placentia Health Foundation.
