Pam Norman, Owner

Pam Norman

Pam Norman (B.Ed, Dip. Learning Resouces, M.Ed), the owner of the Curves franchise, is a graduate of Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland. Her ambition is to assist Bay Roberts to become one of the healthiest, most active communities in Canada.

Curves opened in Bay Roberts in July 2003 with 512 members. Pam Norman, the owner of the franchise, believes that Curves is much more than a gym! She says that Curves is a heathy lifestyle that encompasses the needs of the whole woman.

Since the opening, she has put that belief into action. As a result, Bay Roberts Curves has achieved enormous success. By July 2004 membership had increased by 81.6% to over 930 women, and the facility had a full and part time staff of seven. Due to the increased membership, Bay Roberts Curves moved in July 2004 into a spacious new facility which will offer more services to members. Women enrolled in the Bay Roberts Curves have lost an impressive 4,067.79 pounds and 11,967.69 inches. In addition, Curves has made itself an important part of community life by participating in a number of community fund rasing ventures and community activities.

Activities Since Opening in July 2003

Improved Health for Women
Guiding the women into their fitness programs has been rewarding for the Curves staff. They spread the message that muscle building has dramatically more positive results for bone density, arthritis, body toning, strength gain and overall health than other exercise programs. The staff has observed success indicators in these involved in the program. Members who are Type II diabetics have been able decrease insulin intake daily and arthritis patients have had gains in mobility as well as decreases in or withdrawals from medications. They have seen women become more energized and experience a feeling of wellness they have never known before strength training.

Duing the first year Curves has offered 2 six week diet challenges with great results. It was a learning experience for all involved as the staff got acquainted with "Permanent Results Without Permanent Dieting". In the first year members have lost a total of 4,067.79 pounds and 11,967.69 inches. Success stories are proudly on display and the members see pounds disappearing daily. As more diet sessions begin, many dieters are metabolically tuning to maintain their goals.

In March, they collected 4755.25 lbs of food for the Helping Hand with a "Food for Friends Promotion." In May, they sponsored "Nina's Walk for the Red Cross" and raised $325.25. Then in June Curves sponsored the "Heel'N'Wheel-A-Thon," which raised $775.00 in memory of Lloyd Morgan, Curves member Gloria Morgan's son. Curves is now in the process of raising money for the Trinity Conception Placentla Health Foundation Telethon, another worth while cause that will benefit the whole community.

Community Activities
Curves staff and members have participated in a number of community events and activities, such as the Bay Roberts Santa Claus Parade at Christmas and the Klondyke Parade during Klondyke Days. During the summer some of the Curves staff and members have dedicated their early mornings by getting out of the bed and rowing at 5:45am at Lady Lake in Harbour Grace. They are getting ready for the Harbour Grace Regatta which will take place on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at Lady Lake in Harbour Grace.
