The Town of Bay Roberts, the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Society, & Fergus O’Byrne present
the 3rd Annual “Young Folk at The Hall” in Bay Roberts
Do you play a traditional musical instrument and/or sing folk songs???
Hi Young Folks,
Once again, this year, in conjunction with the Songs, Stages and Seafood Festival, The Town of Bay Roberts and the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Society, I will be producing a Young Folk at the Hall Project in Bay Roberts.
For the last 16 years, under the auspices of the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Society, I have been organizing and producing a similar project in St. John’s. My idea for the project emanated from the belief I have that young people do not have the opportunity to meet in an informal situation to both pursue their interest in singing and playing folk music and to share with and learn from their peers. I have also been successfully producing similar projects around the province working with various organizations and municipalities.
A Sunday evening concert featuring young musicians (ages 7 – 18) will be produced at The Shearstown Community Centre on Sunday May 27th, at 7 pm. Leading up to the concert two three-hour workshops (approx) will be conducted on the two Saturday afternoons prior to the concert (May 19th and May 26th). The purpose of the workshops will be to give the young musicians an opportunity to share their talents with other young musicians in an informal setting; to develop musical relationships among the young musicians; and primarily, to foster the idea that playing music in a “session” setting is an enjoyable and fulfilling activity. The content of the Sunday afternoon concert will emanate from these two workshops
We would ask that the young musicians who wish to register have a repertoire (it need not be extensive) of folk songs and/or music. The workshops will team various young folk together to produce three to four pieces to be performed as an ensemble for the concert. Depending on the number of children registered we may have 4-6 ensembles performing in the concert.
Several local musicians and I will facilitate these workshops sessions. The workshops will give the young musicians and singers an opportunity to work with and play with these older musicians, learn more about their instrument of choice (voice included) and explore the possibility of musical liaisons with their peers and have FUN! Also, the Workshops will be FREE.
If you are interested, please reply/register by filling out the details on the Registration form and email (or mail) it to the return addresses as soon as possible. Also, if you know of any interested young musical friends, please ask them to get in touch with me also. Unfortunately, space is limited so please register early.
